This CryEngine 3 mod should be a new Aliens game

first_imgIf you need proof that opening up access to game engines and their tools for modders is a very good idea, look no further than the video above. What you are watching is Aliens vs. Marine: the work of modder oldschool.Dave. He’s using Crytek’s CryEngine 3 to implement a remake of Aliens vs. Predator. The Marine part, at least, and this is just an initial environment test along with some easily recognizable sound effects. I think he nailed it, don’t you?AdChoices广告The reaction this video has received on the CryDev forums and in the gaming press has been nothing but positive. It looks as though that reception was enough to encourage Dave to continue with the project and actually make it into a game. The video is using textures from Doom 3 and AvP 2010, but Paul is now in the process of replacing them with his own textures, something he admits is very time consuming. He’s also working on populating the world, with his first job being creating the AI and animation for facehuggers. If the quality remains this high then I don’t mind waiting a while for a playable version. Paul is aiming to get a new video with actual combat on show ready for February next year. If he manages it, then I bet a Kickstarter may be on the cards to get the funding for producing a full game.Of course, the one issue with that is obtaining the rights to make a game using the Aliens IP. Hopefully developer Gearbox Software (currently working on Aliens: Colonial Marines) or someone of importance at 20th Century Fox sees this and decides to do something (positive) about it. Even if it never turns into an actual game, Dave should have no trouble getting a job as a level designer/artist.CryDev.net, via Kotakulast_img read more
