Big guns destroy U.S. schools

first_imgBigger guns are destroying children’s lives in U.S. schools than the AR-15 used in the heinous Florida school murders.Schools across the country are facing untenable choices of what programs to slash and how many teachers to cut, with an impact that puts millions of young lives and futures at risk. These cuts in essential programs are because each year the U.S. military budget is relentlessly increased by 10 percent. Some of this increase is hidden in cost overruns and military “supplements” for ongoing wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. In order to “balance the federal budget,” annual 5 percent cuts are ordered, on average, to “discretionary spending” in federal agencies and also to state and city programs.Federal funding makes up an average of 31 percent of state budgets in 2018. Even where local tax increases or bonds attempt to fill the budget gap, this increased revenue is not enough to make up for cuts in state funding, due to federal cuts.On a national level, state education funding per student is lower in 2018 than in 2008. Education workers’ job benefits such as health care premiums and pensions are cut, or increased costs are demanded from these already underpaid city and state workers. But worse cuts are on the way.Trump’s 2018 budget plans to increase military spending by $54 billion and cut nonmilitary programs by the same amount. The latest budget will dismantle numerous programs in health care, nutrition, affordable housing, the environment, science, the few remaining poverty programs, transportation and infrastructure projects that will affect the quality of life of millions upon millions of working and oppressed people.Children’s education and health programs face the deepest cuts.U.S. military expenditures are already larger than that of the rest of the world combined, and U.S. weapons could incinerate the world many times over. To continue to expand this military, there is no essential program that the U.S. capitalist class is not willing to loot and destroy. In order to justify this enormous theft of the peoples’ resources, the U.S. ruling class must create endless political crisis and military confrontations on an ever-more-dangerous scale. The resulting militarism permeates society with the poison of both random and calculated violence.Meanwhile, profits are constantly increasing to the military corporations, private contractors, secret spy agencies, cyber warfare units and maintenance of more than 1,000 foreign military bases. Billions that could go to education are poured into research and development of new weapons systems.Local police forces are armed with U.S. military equipment and tanks, and their training is coordinated with the military. This gives the cops, the local repressive arm of capitalist society, far more leverage in its ongoing war on communities of color throughout the U.S. These are the same cops patrolling the hallways of public schools, which have been turned into school-to-prison pipelines.End gun violence in the schools!Money for education, not for war and militarization!Flounders is a co-coordinator of the International Action Center, a leading anti-war and anti-imperialist organization based in the U.S. (iacenter.org)FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

H5N1 spreads to more Indian districts

first_imgJan 5, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – Animal health officials in India’s West Bengal state recently reported new H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks in two more districts, according to media reports.Officials from the affected districts said the virus was found in two villages in Darjeeling and adjacent sites in Jalpaiguri, according to a Jan 3 report from Reuters. The outbreaks involved chickens, the Times of India reported yesterday. The two districts are neighbors in the northern part of West Bengal state.Surendra Gupta, an official with Darjeeling district, said 30 culling teams were slated to start destroying birds yesterday, and Bandana Yadav, an official from Jalpaiguri, said 10 teams from the district also set out yesterday to cull birds within the outbreak radius. In late November the virus cropped up in India again after a 5-month lull, striking birds in Assam state, according to previous reports. In mid December, neighboring West Bengal state started reporting fresh outbreaks. An area of Bangladesh that borders both states has also reported recent H5N1 outbreaks.Elsewhere, veterinary officials in Vietnam recently confirmed in a statement released to the Vietnam Agriculture newspaper an H5N1 outbreak in Thai Nguyen province in the northern part of the country, according to a Dec 29 report from Xinhua, China’s state news service. The outbreak struck 100 45-day-old poultry and was the province’s second outbreak in 2008, the report said.In other developments, livestock officials in South Korea reported that they detected the low-pathogenic H5N2 virus at a duck farm in North Chungchong province, in the central part of the country, according to a Jan 2 report from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).No bird illnesses or deaths were reported, but officials found the virus during ongoing surveillance of all duck farms that began in September, the report said. Authorities culled 6,837 birds to control the spread of the virus.Investigators haven’t determined the source of the virus. South Korea’s last H5N2 outbreak occurred in October 2008 when the virus was detected at a duck farm in the city of Yesan, in South Chungchong province.See also:Jan 2 OIE report on South Korea’s H5N2 outbreakDec 1, 2008, CIDRAP News story “India reports new H5N1 outbreak”last_img read more

Joshua-Pulev fight may be moved — Promoter

first_imgRelatedPosts COVID-19: NCAA to revoke erring airlines licence over non-compliance FRSC to Schools: We’ll arrest, prosecute drivers who flout COVID-19 rules Sanwo-Olu: We’re committed to fulfilling promises to Lagosians Anthony Joshua’s world heavyweight title fight against Kubrat Pulev on June 20 could be moved to July, says promoter Eddie Hearn. The 30-year-old Briton is due to defend his WBA, WBO and IBF belts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “We do have a potential date in July but, right now, we are hoping June 20 can remain the date,” Matchroom Boxing’s Hearn told Sky Sports. Bulgarian Pulev, 38, is the mandatory IBF challenger to take on Joshua. With the uncertainty around when the remaining games in domestic football will be completed because of the coronavirus outbreak, and the possibility the season could extend into the summer months, Hearn said he has had conversations with Tottenham to “make sure we’re all on the same page”. “We know we have the same strategy moving forward,” added Hearn. “Obviously the Premier League decision will play a big part in a number of sports. Plans to put new dates in place and that fight as well.” Joshua won the WBA, WBO and IBF belts back with a unanimous points victory over Andy Ruiz Jr last December. If the fight with Pulev does go ahead, it will be Joshua’s first bout in the United Kingdom since beating Alexander Povetkin at Wembley in September 2018. He was initially due to fight Pulev at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in October 2017 but the Bulgarian withdrew after suffering a shoulder injury in sparring, with Carlos Takam stepping in to replace him at 12 days’ notice.Tags: Anthony JoshuaBOXINGCoronavirusCOVID-19Eddie HearnIBFKubrat PulevWBAWBOWorld Heavyweight Title Fightlast_img read more

Again, Paralympians to the Rescue

first_imgThe 2016 Paralympic Games ended Sunday night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with Team Nigeria’s Paralympians rescuing the country once again as it happened in London four years ago. DURO IKHAZUAGBE writesJust like it happened four years ago, Team Nigeria’s special athletes to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil have done it again! They have again removed shame from us as a country. Coming on the heel of a dismal performance at the 2016 Olympic Games where all we have to show is the bronze medal won by the John Mikel Obi inspired Dream Team VI, our paralympians achieved an all-time best performance of eight gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Nigeria finished overall 17th out of the 83 countries that made it to the medals table.Power-lifters: Lucy Ejike, Paul Kehinde, Roland Ezuruike, Bose Omolayo, Josephine Orji and Ndidi Nwosu were on top of their various categories. Flora Ugwunwa and petit Lauritta Onye straddled the javelin and shot put events to also add two precious gold medals to the six won by the power-lifter. Ezuruike won Nigeria’s first gold in Rio. Ejike broke the Paralympic and world record three successive times, to win the women’s -61kg event. Her successful attempt at 136.kg set a new Paralympic and world records. Ejike went on to set a bigger mark of 138kg, before lifting a massive 142kg to pick the gold. Kehinde in the -65kg men’s category lifted 218kg to beat his rivals to the gold medal. Omolayo broke her world record to set a new one with 138kg lift to also win gold medal.Orji’s gold in the women’s -+86kg power-lifting event was full of drama. She entered the contest with 151kg lift, a weight that was far beyond the capacity of any other competitor in her category. The only other lifter who came close to her effrontery, Egypt’s Nadya Ali failed in all her three attempts to lift 145kg. Orji lifted 154kg to set a new world record.Ugwunwa won the women’s javelin throw – F53/54 event and the gold. With a throw of 20.25m, Ugwunwa set a new world record to beat Tunisia’s Hania Aidi and South Africa’s Ntombizanele Situ to second and third places respectively. Onye on the other hand, competing in the women’s shot put f40 event on the Day-four of the Rio Paralympics, first heaved 7.83m that saw her shatter her world record of 7.72m set at the IPC World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar in 2015. Onye’s fourth attempt of 8.40m sent secured the fifth gold medal for Team Nigeria. Nwosu on the other hand defeated the defending champion to win women’s -73kg Power-lifting event gold medal.Nwosu was set for the bronze medal before the Nigerian lady stepped up in her very last attempt, lifting 140kg to equal the Paralympics Record and usurp France’s Souhad Ghazouani for the gold. The feat of the paralympians was achieved through the ‘I Can Do it’ Nigerian spirit. It was not because they were granted the right conditioning by those saddled with running Nigerian sports. But for a country of over 170 million people, gold medal winner at previous Games (Atlanta ’96 and Sydney 2000), the outing in Brazil was bad news for the Olympians. Certainly not for the paralympians who are our heroes and heroines at the moment. So much hope was placed on Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor to deliver in track and field’s sprint and long jump. Same goes for Daniel Igali and his wrestlers. Medal of any colour was going to be a bonus from Nigeria’s lone qualifier in boxing, Efe Ajagba. Of course, Aruna Quadri and Segun Toriola who led the table tennis team where clearly ranked outsiders before the Games began due to their world rankings. Aruna’s unfortunate quarter final pairing with world Number 1, Ma Long of China, was certainly no good news for the 2014 ITTF Star Player.Yet, Nigerians were hoping for miracles to happen. Why not? After all, Chioma Ajunwa was not favourite for any medal in Atlanta ’96 long jump but ended up with the ultimate gold medal. But by the time those who had prepared for four years began to compete against Team Nigeria athletes, no one needed to be told that our chances of making the podium and be counted amongst gold medalists was going to be a mirage. And so, Okagbare failed to make the final of both 100m and 200m. The long jump that would have been her best chance for a medal, she skipped it for the longer sprint because both events clashed. Not even Tosin Oke and Doreen Amata who are in top brackets of the men’s triple jump and women’s high jump could make the final of their respective events. Unlike at the London Games where Nigeria made finals of no less than six events of the track and field, Rio2016 was a mission impossible. Save youngster Divine Oduduru who showed brilliance in the 200m, reaching the semi final in his first Olympic appearance, there certainly was nothing to cheer from athletics. Is anyone surprised that Nigeria failed in Brazil? To discerning followers of the country’s sports, there couldn’t have been better news for Team Nigeria beyond the bronze. Four years after former President Goodluck Jonathan conveyed a Presidential Summit on Sports in Abuja to review why Nigeria failed at London 2012, nothing came out of that jaw jaw, that had the best of the country’s sports technocrats present papers on the way forward.Instead of putting into action all that were articulated at that summit to ensure that Rio2016 became a turning-point, the sport sector was ignored. Other countries who valued the Games gave their preparations the desired fillip needed to excel. Great Britain for instance that was behind Nigeria on the medals table at Atlanta ’96 consolidated on the programme it initiated ahead of hosting the 2012 edition. Is anyone surprised that Team Great Britain upstaged China to emerge the second best team at Rio2016 winning 27 gold 23 silver and 17 bronze medals? Their athletes have also carried the new form into the paralympic, finishing second behind China with 64 gold, 30 silver and 44 bronze medals.Of course, sports loving Nigerians who were made to go through the stress of staying up all night to watch Team Nigeria perform at Rio2016 are up in arms against those saddled with the running of the country’s sports. Dalung who appears to lack the direction to lead Nigeria’s sports sector is blaming everyone but himself for the poor outing. Are we expecting to see any change at the next Games in Tokyo Japan in 2020? It is very doubtful. Nothing is going to change with the way we are carrying on the business of sports in the country. Until we begin to treat sports like business and not mere leisure, Team Nigeria will always attend the Olympic, merely to add up the number. No serious country will treat her country’s preparation for the Games the way we did ahead of Rio2016. There was no preparation of any sort both locally and abroad. The story of the Under-23 football team who went to Atlanta, USA as part of their preparation for the Games in Brazil is now all too familiar. That the Dream Team won the bronze in the football event was not because Nigeria adequately prepared for it. Rather, it was the sheer determination of the boys (and Coach Samson Siasia) to succeed. How the boys were left stranded without funds by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports is well known to all. Of course, the Olympic is no FIFA event and so cash-strapped Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) cannot be blamed for the hell the Dream Team VI went through to achieve the bronze medal finish. It took the intervention of Mikel twice to bail out the team from cash embarrassment. Even after being stranded in Atlanta with the prospect of missing its first group game against Japan looming, it took the intervention of America airliner, Delta Air, to come to its rescue. The Chelsea star again came on to rescue the team ahead of its second game.As if to tell Nigerians that we should learn to appreciate what we have, it took a Japanese plastic surgeon Katsuya Takasu to show appreciation to the Dream Team, handing out a hefty $390,000 reward to the boys. To date, no other person, (corporate or individual) has come out to reward the boys for the lone bronze brought home by the team. That goes to show the mere lip service we all have been paying to sports development. Yet, we all want to see Team Nigeria win gold medals with no motivation. In four years time, it will not surprise followers of Nigerian sport if we return from Japan empty handed in the Olympic and only have to take consolation in the paralympians salvaging the situation again as they have done again in Brazil. We hardly ever learn from history.FINAL PARALYMPIC TABLEShare this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Fans Tweeted Racist Remarks At Cinci’s Octavius Ellis After His Physical Play vs. Kentucky

first_imgCincinnati's Octavius Ellis.Cincinnati junior sophomore forward Octavius Ellis had himself an interesting week, to say the least. Ellis, one of the more physical players in the nation, was ejected against Purdue in his team’s second round contest after swinging an elbow at Boilermaker A.J. Hammons early in the second half. After the game, he made headlines when he trash-talked Kentucky ahead of their third round matchup. Unfortunately, that isn’t really where the story ends.Following the Wildcats’ win over the Bearcats Saturday night, a number of college basketball fans tweeted disparaging remarks at Ellis. Many of the comments were racist in nature. Others suggested he is a “thug”, and will be in jail soon. Here’s a sampling of what’s out there.Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.28.38 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.28.05 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.29.34 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.30.02 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.25.57 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.27.42 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.28.55 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.28.25 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.26.43 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.26.28 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.24.40 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.24.58 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.25.17 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.25.36 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.24.15 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.24.01 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.23.37 PM Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 6.29.13 PMIt’s important to note that it’s likely that not all of these “fans” support Kentucky, and even if they do, they don’t represent the majority of the team’s fan base. Florida Haters Will Greatly Enjoy “An Interview With Will Muschamp”

first_imgFlorida Will Muschamp HatersFlorida Will Muschamp HatersWill Muschamp’s tenure as head coach in Gainesville got off to a decent start, but by the end of the 2014 season, Gators fans were campaigning for him to be replaced. Florida eventually cut ties with Muschamp after he won just 10 games combined in his final two years, and he wound up taking the defensive coordinator position at Auburn shortly after. A YouTube user by the name of SCS Productions decided to make light of the situation, adding hilarious subtitles to the popular interview between Jesus Quintero and comedian El Risitas. If you’re wondering, the original interview was conducted back in 2007, but it didn’t become Internet-famous until March of 2015.If you’re a fan of Florida’s mishaps over the past few years, you’ll have a hard time not laughing out loud.[YouTube]last_img read more
