President David Granger on Friday told residents of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) that the Botanical Gardens will be modified to contain varieties of every tree found anywhere in Guyana.According to the Public Information and Press Service Unit within the Ministry of the Presidency, the President said, “I am going to change the National Botanical Gardens. That Botanical Gardens must be the home of a specimen of every tree in Guyana. It must obtain, it must contain, it must maintain several specimens of all species of trees in Guyana. Children must be able to go and see what a greenheart tree is, what a crabwood tree is, what a purpleheart tree is…not just mango and guava [trees]. They have a thousand species of trees to learn about.”The ministry’s media unit reported that Granger who was at this year’s National Tree Planting Day held at Union Village (No. 53), said “the Botanical Gardens must become a schoolhouse for our children to learn the wonders of Guyana’s trees.”Meanwhile, the President noted that Guyana will commemorate the 50th anniversary of its Republican status next year, which will coincide with petroleum development and the launch a Decade of Development: 2020-2029.The ‘Decade’ is aimed at ensuring that every section, sector and segment of our society will benefit from economic development. The President said objectives of the Decade of Development are aligned to the Green State Development Strategy (GSDS): Vision 2040.The President assured that agriculture will not be neglected during the ‘Decade’ and that food products, not petroleum, will remain a mainstay of the economy.“Agro-processing will intensify during the ‘Decade’. Guyana’s petroleum revenues, inter alia, will be deployed to modernize the agricultural sector, including by adding value to primary, locally-produced fruits and vegetables, in accordance with the ‘Strategy’,” Granger said.Further, he added that investment is the muscle of production and Government, notwithstanding the advances made over the past four years, recognizes the need to catalyse the agro-industrial sector.“It will offer fiscal incentives for investors interested in promoting export-oriented agro-processing,” he said.Granger iterated that trees are essential to developing the agro-industrial sector. He reminded that the East Berbice-Corentyne has the land, the expertise and the experience to accelerate the development of tree-based, agro-processing which can provide economic and environmental benefits. The President said the agro-processing of fruits will allow everyone to benefit from trees without having to cut them down, adding that the Regions should encourage the generation of gardens, greenhouses and orchards to grow more trees.Agro-processing is a key element of Guyana’s Green State Development Strategy: Vision 2040. The ‘Strategy’ is Guyana’s roadmap towards becoming a ‘green’ state and one which emphasizes the commodification of agricultural productio

Pau Gasol316.31.920.1 K. Abdul-Jabbar816.23.751.3 James’s Cavs and Heat teams have generally gone into the Finals with far less than a coin flip’s chance of winning the series. And although James played poorly (especially by his standards) during his first two appearances — including a 2011 matchup with the Dallas Mavericks, in which Miami was favored and could have won if James had only performed better — he’s been playing at a progressively higher level as his Finals career has gone on. With the Warriors’ juggernaut always advancing out of the Western Conference in recent years, though, it hasn’t mattered. So in that sense, it’s not really a surprise that James has that 3-6 record in the Finals. In fact, if you add up the pre-series odds in the table above, you get an expected championship count of 2.8 for James — meaning he’s somehow running 0.2 titles above expectation, despite his record. Although that trails Jordan (who won 1.9 times more than we’d expect from the pre-series odds), it’s better than Bryant, whose 5-2 mark is exactly even with what the probabilities would have expected. Here are those numbers for every player who averaged at least a Game Score of 15.0 across a minimum of three NBA Finals appearances since the ABA-NBA merger: 2007CLESAS27.5%10.6 2011MIADAL55.913.7 Kyrie Irving318.90.610.4 Count the (adjusted) ringsNBA championships won vs. expected (based on pre-series Elo ratings) for players with at least 3 Finals appearances and an average Game Score of 15.0 per game, 1977-2018 Magic Johnson921.14.051.0 Kevin Durant325.92.42-0.4 2016CLEGSW27.426.5✓ Julius Erving421.22.21-1.2 Stephen Curry418.23.23-0.2 2018CLEGSW19.628.3 LeBron has seldom had much of a chance in the FinalsPre-series odds (via Elo ratings) for LeBron James’s teams in the NBA Finals Clyde Drexler319.81.21-0.2 2015CLEGSW21.424.6 Tim Duncan6184.108.40.206 Scottie Pippen6220.127.116.11 Finals Wins Michael Jordan624.54.16+1.9 2014MIASAS20.922.5 YearTeamOpponentPre-Finals W%Finals Game Score/GWon Finals? 2012MIAOKC30.823.6✓ Isiah Thomas317.61.920.1 Another year, another NBA Finals defeat for LeBron James. After his Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Golden State Warriors Friday night, ending a four-game championship sweep, James’s Finals ledger now lists only 3 wins against 6 losses. It’s a mark completely out of step with those of his historical peers, including Michael Jordan (6-0), Tim Duncan (5-1), Kobe Bryant (5-2), Shaquille O’Neal (4-2) and Stephen Curry (3-1). It’s also probably the No. 1 stumbling block in James’s case as the NBA’s greatest-ever player. But, as is usually the case when you dig deeper than simple ring-counting, things are more complicated than they initially seem. For instance: According to the pre-series Vegas lines, Jordan was favored in all six of his Finals bids, while James has been an underdog seven times in his nine trips to the Finals. One of the hallmarks of James’s career has been dragging terrible teammates to the brink of a championship (and none might have been worse than the crew he brought to face the Warriors this season). That’s great for boosting a player’s tally of Finals appearances — but it leads to a terrible record in the title round itself.Because of this, any analysis of rings won has to account for the differing levels of expectation a player’s teams have going into each series. And by that standard, James has actually won more championships than we’d reasonably expect him to, even after falling to the Warriors this year.We can measure a player’s Finals record versus expectation by using FiveThirtyEight’s Elo ratings (which measure a team’s relative quality at any given moment) to calculate his teams’ pre-series odds of winning the Finals. Add up those probabilities over an entire career, and you get the number of titles we’d expect a player to have won, adjusted for who he played and how good his own team was. Here’s how James’s Finals career breaks down against expectation: Hakeem Olajuwon318.104.22.168 LeBron James922.62.830.2 Shaquille O’Neal622.63.840.2 Kobe Bryant716.75.050.0 Larry Bird520.63.13-0.1 PlayerAppearancesAvg. That’s probably still a knock if we’re judging his candidacy for the title of absolute GOAT, but adjusting for competition does end up softening the blow of LeBron’s raw Finals record. Individually, James has outplayed almost all of his peers on the game’s biggest stage, but he’s seldom been in a position to convert those performances into championships. And in many ways, 2018 was the ultimate microcosm of James’s Finals career. He went into the series as a massive underdog, after carrying his undermanned Cavs through a grueling Eastern Conference playoff run. Even as James was scoring 51 points in Game 1, JR Smith’s late blunder probably cost Cleveland its best chance to make the Finals competitive. (It also reportedly spurred James to punch a whiteboard in the locker room after the game, injuring his hand for the rest of the series.) Still, according to Game Score, James had one of the best individual NBA Finals of any player since the merger (on a per-game basis) … and for all of his efforts, the Cavs still got swept. He might have been the only player ever, in any sport, who could earn Finals MVP speculation while being on the wrong side of a sweep. This is LeBron James’s fate, it appears. And because of it, we have to measure him relative to his conditions, rather than in the typical vacuum of ring-counting analyses. Perhaps that will be one of James’s enduring legacies: He caused us to bring a new level of nuance to the usual debates about Finals records.

Derrick Kellier, hascautioned consumers and stakeholders in the food industry, not to panic in the face of the reported shortages in the pork industry and to resist the urge for imported alternatives.“I wish to refer to the current situation as it relates to the reported shortages in the pork industry. While we appreciate that there may be a current tightness in the market, we need to resist the urge to open (the) floodgates of importation and thereby destroying our hard-earned achievements in the sector,” Mr. Kellier said.He issued the caution as he addressed the recent official launch of Jamaica’s ninth Agro-Park, the Sweet River Abattoir Agro-Park near Ferris Cross in Westmoreland. Mr. Kellier noted that the Ministry will do its best to safeguard the gains made and will therefore be calling all stakeholders and industry players to a meeting next week to assess the situation and discuss the way forward. He further told participants at the launching ceremony of the $292 million abattoir, that the Government was committed to providing the legislative framework to ensure the success of the abattoir, by making it mandatory that all commercial meat pass through certified abattoirs.“Together with the National Animal Identification and Traceability System and the recently established Praedial Larceny Unit, we are confident that this arrangement will deal another blow to praedial thieves. I am sure that we can all together make this work,” the Agriculture Minister said. Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp
Hyundai and Kia have made news in recent months for recalls related to possible engine fires, and now, the sister automakers have two new recalls to announce along those lines.Hyundai and Kia have issued recalls covering approximately 500,000 vehicles. There are two separate causes at play here, and while they both might result in engine fires, the defects in question are different. Let’s take a look at each:Recall the first: Catalytic converter overheatingThe first recall affects only Kia vehicles. In this instance, Kia issued a recall for approximately 379,000 examples of the 2012-2016 Soul, all of which have 1.6-liter direct-injection gasoline engines. The problem in this case stems from the catalytic converter, which uses precious metals to help reduce pollutants in exhaust emissions. Excessive exhaust temperatures may damage the converter, allowing particles to enter the combustion chamber and create an abnormal combustion scenario. If this abnormal combustion continues, it might damage the piston’s connecting rods, causing them to fracture the engine block and cause an oil leak, which could turn into an engine fire. Kia technicians will inspect each recalled vehicle at the dealership. To prevent future converter overheating, technicians will upgrade the related ECU software. If the catalytic converter shows signs of damage, it’ll be replaced. If the engine itself shows signs of damage, it, too, might get replaced. Kia will also reimburse owners who had these remedies performed out-of-pocket prior to the recall announcement.Enlarge ImageYou can’t observe your catalytic converter breaking apart, so when it happens, you may not know until your connecting rods decide to make a break for it. Kia Recall the second: Oil pan leaksHyundai and Kia are both involved in this recall. This one affects approximately 32,000 examples of the 2011-2012 Kia Sportage and approximately 120,000 examples of the 2011-2013 Hyundai Tucson. The recall affects models equipped with a 2.4-liter gas I4.This time, the oil pan is to blame. According to recall documents, the oil pans in question might have received insufficient sealing during assembly, allowing them to leak oil. Unsuspecting owners may drive these leaky cars for extended periods of time without monitoring oil levels, and low oil levels can cause engine damage. Oil leaks can also increase the risk of an engine fire. Furthermore, if the engine conks out at speed, it could increase the risk of a crash. The automakers remedied the problem on the assembly line, but they’re still working on fixes for affected vehicles currently on the road. It’ll likely involve oil pan replacement or resealing. Hyundai and Kia will reimburse owners who’ve paid for a remedy already, prior to the recall being announced.Enlarge ImageOil leaks are pretty easy to spot, especially on taller vehicles. Hyundai Prior recalls and other engine fire concernsThe oil-pan recall actually came from an investigation into other Hyundai recalls. While NHTSA was investigating Hyundai’s “timeliness and scope” related to engine recalls for the Sonata and Santa Fe, it told Hyundai that it found a number of engine-stall and fire claims for Hyundai’s Tucson. Hyundai did some digging of its own, and it found a trend that eventually turned into this recall.Hyundai and Kia have been in the news for similar problems for months now. Last October, the Center for Auto Safety called out both automakers for not going far enough in remedying vehicle-fire concerns in some 3 million vehicles. It caught the attention of the US Senate, which invited the automakers to testify in front of a Senate committee, but that meeting was put on hold.In early January, Hyundai and Kia recalled an additional 168,000 vehicles over engine fire concerns. The vehicles in this recall had been previously recalled for problems that resulted in engine replacements, but that replacement may have caused part damage that could lead to another engine fire. The commodity markets regulator said that the business fell in almost all commodities — agriculture, bullion, metals and energy on the exchanges platform. Experts attributed the fall in business mainly to higher transaction costs especially after the imposition of commodity transaction tax (CTT) from last year onwards. The turnover from bullion fell by over 62 per cent to Rs 12.13 lakh crore in the April-October period of the 2014-15 fiscal, from Rs 32.17 lakh crore in the year-ago.Similarly, the business from energy items declined by over 53 per cent to Rs 8.16 lakh crore from Rs 17.48 lakh crore, the turnover from metals declined by 43 per cent to Rs 7.51 lakh crore from Rs 13.11 crore in the review period. The turnover from agricultural commodities too fell by 24 per cent to Rs 6.70 lakh crore in the April-October period of this year, as against Rs 8.82 lakh crore a year ago.
